Giovanni Greco
Poeta e scrittore.Poet and writer.
Sono nato a Marcedusa, ai piedi della Sila Piccola, nella Magna Graecia calabra, e sono cresciuto a Milano. Appena posso torno a Tamarindo, in Costa Rica, dove è nato il mio romanzo Una mezza vittoria.I was born in Marcedusa, at the foot of the Sila Piccola, in the Magna Graecia of Calabria, and grew up in Milan. Whenever I can, I go back to Tamarindo, Costa Rica, where my novel Una mezza vittoria was born.
I am forever searching for beauty so that I can describe it: in a sunset over the ocean, in the face of someone met by chance, in a kind gesture, in the roots that bind me to my land. By nature I stand with the least, and I believe that words exist above all for this: to bring people closer.
Quando non scrivo, leggo, alleno la mente con gli scacchi, ascolto musica di ogni genere e di ogni parte del mondo, e ricostruisco la storia della mia famiglia e dei paesi dei miei avi, che trovi raccontata in queste pagine. When I am not writing, I read, train my mind with chess, listen to music of every genre and from every corner of the world, and piece together the history of my family and of my ancestors’ villages, which you will find told in these pages.
Credo che leggere sia il gesto più rivoluzionario contro le ingiustizie del mondo.I believe that reading is the most revolutionary act against the injustices of the world.

Una poesiaA poem
In un cielo senza nuvole
dove l’essere si espande
tu che illumini il vivere
oltre il traguardo più grande.
— La più dolce delle sensazioni
In a cloudless sky
where the self expands
you who light our lives
beyond the greatest goal.
— The sweetest of sensations
Non è niente
mamma
non è proprio niente
di importante
non ha alcun valore
materiale
…
— Non è niente
It’s nothing
mama
it’s really nothing
important
it has no
material value
…
— It’s nothing
Se si potesse comprare nei mercati:
“Mi dia patate, mele e della saggezza,
e sia gentile, abbondi con quest’ultima
che sono stanco di sbagliar con leggerezza”.
— Saggezza in vendita
If only you could buy it at the market:
“Give me potatoes, apples, and some wisdom,
and please, be generous with that last one
for I’m tired of making careless mistakes.”
— Wisdom for sale
Ci sono mani che reggono il mondo
senza che il mondo le veda mai:
mani che impastano prima dell’alba
mani che cuciono ciò che vestirai.
— Le mani che lavorano
There are hands that hold the world together
though the world never sees them:
hands that knead before dawn
hands that sew what you will wear.
— Hands that labor
La donna più amabile
non è bionda né bruna
è una compagna sincera
che il tempo consuma,
la si insegue di fretta
tra il gioire e il penare
…
— La donna più amabile
The most lovable woman
is neither blonde nor brunette
she is a faithful companion
worn away by time,
she is chased in haste
through pleasure and pain
…
— The most lovable woman
Tu
non sei
migliore
degli altri,
ma
gli altri
…
— Come te
You
are not
better
than others,
but
others
…
— Like you
Quando nacqui ero troppo piccolo
per intendere ciò che accadeva:
con mio padre che mi guardava
e mia madre che mi allattava.
— Vita di un uomo
When I was born I was too small
to grasp what was unfolding:
my father looking at me
my mother nursing me.
— A man’s life
Restano lì
sospese a mezz’aria
le parole
non dette
nel momento perfetto.
Non erano difficili
…
— Le parole non dette
They remain there
suspended in mid-air
the words
left unspoken
when the moment was right.
They were not difficult
…
— Unspoken words
Un giorno
incontrai
un vecchio saggio
che meditando
percorreva
il suo cammino
…
— Un vecchio saggio
One day
I met
an old sage
who walked
his path
deep in meditation
…
— An old sage
Se c’è a volte solitudine
nel fluire del tuo vivere
e cerchi un dolce evadere
tra le righe di un verso,
un amico discreto
che ti tenga compagnia.
— Se tu vuoi…
If at times there is solitude
in the flow of your life
and you seek a sweet escape
among the lines of a verse,
a discreet friend
to keep you company.
— If you want…
